News from the Farm

February is here and spring feels like it is right around the corner! Part of the time, at least. Yesterday, for instance, I was working on the high tunnel, standing up too high on a rickety ladder and sawing furiously, and the sun broke through the clouds and shined so hard that I stopped for a minute to take my coat off.  At this point I realized it was snowing.  Hey, whatever.  It was still a beautiful day and things are rolling along nicely on the farm:

1. My black locust baseboards have finally arrived - the last delivery I needed to get that tunnel built.  The next calm clear day, I'll be putting the plastic on.
2. The onion seeds that I planted last week are starting to sprout! We'll be rolling in vegetables before too long.
3. The organic certification paperwork is finally completed, so we're just waiting on an inspection for that.
4. The chicks should be coming in the mail any day now and we can look forward to fresh eggs again in the future!

And none too soon, in my opinion.  A few more of those days in the fifties, like we had last week, and I'll really have spring fever.  I'll try not to plant the potatoes before St. Patrick's Day, though.

Here's the greenhouse project back in snowy December: all we've got is the ground stakes in:

Here we are a couple weeks ago: the basic frame is all up but not covered in anything yet.

As of today those end walls are covered in polycarbonate sheathing, and we're waiting on the right day to put the plastic on.

More news to come!
